Two Tornadoes Strike Hubei, Eight People Dead and Dozens of Buildings Damaged - RakyatPost.co

At least eight people have reportedly died after two tornadoes struck Hubei Province, China, on Monday (6/7) evening local time. The disaster caused widespread damage across several regions, toppling buildings, overturning vehicles, and triggering a massive rescue operation that is still ongoing.

Emergency management authorities in Hubei stated that the powerful wind vortices hit several cities, including Huangshi, Huanggang, Ezhou, and Xianning, for more than four hours. Wind speeds reportedly reached around 149 kilometers per hour, blowing off building roofs, uprooting trees, and destroying various public facilities. In addition to the eight fatalities, at least one person is still declared missing, and the search process continues to be carried out by rescue teams.

Footage circulating in local media shows the extent of the damage in several areas. Vehicles appeared crushed after being hit by falling building materials, while steel sheets from warehouse roofs flew off and smashed into surrounding areas. Joint personnel were immediately deployed to evacuate residents, clear debris, and restore access to roads that had been cut off by numerous fallen trees.

The Hubei Meteorological Bureau stated that tornadoes are a relatively rare phenomenon in the province. The last recorded tornado in the region occurred in 2021. Nevertheless, experts assess that the frequency of extreme weather in China has continued to rise in recent years due to climate change, which triggers heavy rainfall, heatwaves, and strong winds in various regions.

At the same time, several other provinces in China are also facing threats of severe weather. The regions of Guangxi, Guangdong, Hainan, Shandong, Liaoning, and Jilin are projected to experience heavy rainfall that could potentially trigger floods and landslides. The central government has instructed all regional authorities to reinforce preparedness against hydrometeorological disasters.

The situation is expected to become increasingly challenging as China also prepares for the arrival of Typhoon Bavi, which is predicted to move toward the country’s eastern coast in the coming days. President Xi Jinping has ordered all relevant agencies to exert maximum effort in rescue operations, victim evacuations, and disaster response management to minimize the risk of casualties or further damage.
