81-Year-Old Senior Citizen Dies in Palmerah House Fire, Allegedly Triggered by a Short Circuit

An 81-year-old senior citizen passed away after becoming trapped in a fire that tore through a house in the Palmerah area, West Jakarta, on Sunday (5/7) night. The victim, identified as Suratman, was found lifeless after firefighters managed to control the blaze that gutted his residence.

The West Jakarta Fire and Rescue (Gulkarmat) Sub-department stated that the fire was successfully extinguished after dozens of personnel were deployed to the location. Based on preliminary findings, the incident is suspected to have been triggered by an electrical installation fault or short circuit that sparked a fire inside the house.

The fire occurred on Jalan Palmerah Utara III, Palmerah Urban Village, Palmerah Sub-district, West Jakarta. The initial report was received by officers at around 18:31 WIB. Following up on the information, the firefighting team immediately dispatched five fire engines along with roughly 20 personnel for initial response. Due to the massive scale of the blaze, the fleet and personnel were later reinforced, bringing a total of 90 officers to expedite the extinguishing process.

Once the fire was contained, officers conducted a sweep inside the building to ensure no hotspots or trapped victims remained. During this process, the victim was found deceased inside the house. The body was subsequently evacuated for further handling by authorities. To date, officials are still cataloging the material losses resulting from the fire.

The Head of Operations for the West Jakarta Gulkarmat Sub-department, Achmad Saiful Kahfi, stated that the temporary suspected cause of the fire points to an electrical phenomenon. The burned area is estimated to cover around 10 x 12 square meters. However, a deeper investigation is still being carried out to pinpoint the exact source of the fire.

This incident serves as another crucial reminder of the importance of ensuring that home electrical installations are safe and up to standard. Authorities urge the public to routinely check electrical networks, avoid overloading a single connection with excessive electronic devices, and immediately replace outdated wiring to mitigate fire risks, especially in densely populated residential areas.
