Universitas Muslim Indonesia (UMI) and the Health and Islamic Law Institute (LAKK) of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) have launched a strategic collaboration to strengthen Indonesia’s Sharia healthcare ecosystem, integrating education, research, innovation, professional certification, and healthcare services based on Islamic values.
The partnership aims to establish a comprehensive framework that combines academic excellence with ethical healthcare practices, positioning Indonesia as a contributor to the advancement of Sharia-based healthcare for both domestic and international Muslim communities.
UMI Rector Prof. Hambali Thalib said the initiative reflects a long-term commitment to developing healthcare systems that align scientific progress with Islamic principles. According to him, Sharia healthcare offers an opportunity to bridge medical knowledge, healthcare services, and religious values in ways that generate broader social benefits.
He emphasized that universities play a vital role in producing high-quality research, innovation, and healthcare services while maintaining ethical standards. Through its collaboration with LAKK MUI, UMI seeks to become one of the leading institutions advancing Sharia healthcare, not only in Indonesia but also across the wider Islamic world.
Prof. Hambali added that the partnership is consistent with UMI’s Catur Dharma framework, which integrates education, research, community service, institutional values, and character development. He said these principles provide the foundation for creating knowledge and innovations that deliver tangible benefits to society.
As part of the collaboration, UMI Vice Rector V, Setyawati Yani, announced plans to establish the UMI Center for Sharia Healthcare Studies. The center is expected to serve as a national hub for education, scientific research, professional training, innovation, and collaboration related to Islamic healthcare.
According to Setyawati, UMI has already conducted extensive academic work in Islamic health sciences, including research on Prophetic Medicine (Thibbun Nabawi). The new partnership will integrate the university’s academic resources, research capacity, and community engagement programs into a unified ecosystem capable of supporting the development of Sharia healthcare standards.
She explained that the center is designed to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration among researchers, healthcare professionals, educators, and policymakers. By bringing these stakeholders together, the university hopes to accelerate innovation while ensuring that healthcare practices remain aligned with Islamic ethical values.
Meanwhile, Dean of the UMI Faculty of Medicine, Dr. dr. Nasrudin, said the university has been laying the groundwork for Sharia healthcare development for more than a decade. Research related to Prophetic Medicine has been conducted at UMI since 2012, providing an academic foundation for the broader initiative announced this year.
The collaboration between UMI and LAKK MUI is expected to strengthen Indonesia’s position in the growing field of Islamic healthcare while expanding opportunities for research, professional development, and community-based health services. By integrating education, innovation, and ethical healthcare practices, both institutions aim to develop a sustainable model that can contribute to the advancement of healthcare systems across the Muslim world.
