The World Health Organization (WHO) has urged an immediate expansion of efforts to contain the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), warning that the virus is spreading faster than current response measures.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus issued the call after meeting with health and humanitarian partners in Kinshasa to assess the evolving outbreak and discuss the challenges facing response teams.
According to Tedros, the pace of transmission has outstripped existing containment efforts, with new Ebola cases doubling within a single week in several of the outbreak’s main hotspots. He stressed that all partners agreed on the urgent need to significantly strengthen response operations across every aspect of the emergency.
Tedros emphasized that a more comprehensive strategy is required to reach all affected communities, even in areas facing security challenges and large-scale population displacement. He noted that these obstacles should not delay the delivery of lifesaving health services.
The WHO chief also highlighted the importance of stronger coordination under the leadership of the Congolese government to ensure that response activities remain organized and effective. Close cooperation among national authorities, international organizations, and humanitarian agencies, he said, will be essential to slowing the spread of the virus.
Another priority identified by WHO is providing adequate protection, training, and operational support for frontline healthcare workers, who continue to face significant risks while treating infected patients and conducting surveillance activities.
Tedros further called for faster access to essential Ebola response services, including medical treatment, disease surveillance, contact tracing, and safe, dignified burial procedures. Strengthening these measures, he said, is critical to interrupting transmission chains and reducing fatalities.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo has experienced multiple Ebola outbreaks over the past decade, requiring coordinated national and international responses to contain the disease. Public health experts continue to stress that rapid detection, community engagement, and timely medical intervention remain among the most effective tools for controlling future outbreaks.
WHO said intensified action by governments, humanitarian organizations, and international partners will be necessary to prevent the current outbreak from escalating further.
