Pistachio Linked to Better Heart Health and Blood Sugar Control

Pistachios may offer a wide range of health benefits thanks to their rich nutritional profile, including fiber, healthy fats, protein, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. According to a review published by Health on Wednesday, regular consumption of pistachios has been associated with improved heart health, better blood sugar management, and enhanced digestive function.

The nutrient-dense tree nut contains both soluble and insoluble fiber, making it beneficial for digestive health. Insoluble fiber supports regular bowel movements, while soluble fiber helps nourish beneficial gut bacteria. These bacteria produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which play an important role in maintaining the intestinal lining and reducing inflammation.

Pistachios are also considered heart-friendly because they provide potassium, monounsaturated fats, and dietary fiber. A 2020 study involving 100 overweight adults found that participants who consumed approximately 1.5 ounces of pistachios daily for four months experienced greater reductions in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure compared with those following a weight-loss program alone.

In addition, a review of 34 scientific studies published in 2020 reported that diets enriched with pistachios were more effective at lowering total cholesterol, LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, and triglyceride levels than diets including several other types of nuts.

The nuts are also a rich source of antioxidants, particularly lutein and zeaxanthin, which give pistachios their distinctive green color. These compounds help protect cells against oxidative stress caused by free radicals and are present in higher amounts than in many other nuts.

Research also suggests pistachios may support brain health. They contain flavonoids along with lutein and zeaxanthin, nutrients associated with cognitive function. A 2021 study involving more than 76,000 adults in the United States found that higher flavonoid intake was linked to a lower risk of cognitive decline.

For individuals concerned about blood sugar levels, pistachios may provide additional benefits. Their combination of protein, fiber, and relatively low carbohydrate content can help regulate glucose levels. A review of six studies found that pistachio consumption was associated with lower fasting blood sugar levels and improved insulin resistance among people with type 2 diabetes.

A one-ounce (28-gram) serving of pistachios contains approximately 159 calories, 5.7 grams of protein, and 3 grams of fiber, along with essential nutrients such as vitamin B6, copper, phosphorus, potassium, vitamin E, iron, and zinc.

Health experts recommend choosing unsalted pistachios to reduce sodium intake and consuming them in moderation due to their calorie density. Individuals with tree nut allergies are also advised to avoid pistachios.
