Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to attend the opening of the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC), underscoring Beijing’s growing focus on artificial intelligence as a strategic driver of economic development, technological competitiveness, and global governance.
The conference and its High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance will take place in Shanghai from July 17 to 20. Xi is scheduled to deliver a keynote address at the opening ceremony, where he is expected to outline China’s policies, priorities, and proposals for the development and governance of AI.
His participation marks a significant moment for the annual event, which was launched in 2018. Xi’s planned appearance comes as China accelerates efforts to strengthen its domestic AI ecosystem while seeking a greater role in shaping international rules for the rapidly advancing technology.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said AI innovation is advancing rapidly and creating both opportunities and challenges for the international community. Beijing expects the conference to provide a platform for governments, businesses, universities, research institutions, and international organizations to build trust and deepen cooperation.
The 2026 event carries the theme “Intelligent Partners, Co-create the Future.” China is expected to use the gathering to promote its vision for AI that supports broader development while emphasizing safety and orderly governance. Beijing has also highlighted cooperation with developing countries as part of its approach to expanding access to AI capabilities.
WAIC has grown into one of China’s most prominent technology gatherings, combining policy discussions with demonstrations of emerging AI products and research. Last year’s conference brought together government officials, corporate executives, and leading scientists while featuring thousands of technology exhibits.
Xi’s presence in 2026 signals that artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly central to China’s long-term technology strategy. His address will therefore be closely watched for indications of how Beijing intends to balance innovation, economic opportunity, security concerns, and international cooperation as competition over AI continues to intensify worldwide.
