BPOM Earns WHO Listed Authority Status, Pharmaceuticals Target Global Market - RakyatPost.co

The Indonesian Food and Drug Authority (BPOM) has officially gained recognition as a WHO Listed Authority (WLA), a status granted by the World Health Organization to drug regulatory authorities deemed to meet international standards.
This achievement is considered a vital step for the Indonesian pharmaceutical industry to expand access to global markets and enhance the competitiveness of national health products.
The WHO Listed Authority status indicates that the drug regulation and supervision system in Indonesia has met internationally recognized standards for quality, safety, and effectiveness.
The government stated that this recognition could strengthen global confidence in Indonesian pharmaceutical products, including medicines, vaccines, and other health commodities.
Health industry observers assess that WLA status has the potential to open wider export opportunities for national pharmaceutical companies because the process of product quality recognition becomes stronger in the eyes of the international market.
In addition to expanding export opportunities, this recognition is also seen as a catalyst for encouraging investment in the domestic pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors.
In recent years, the Indonesian pharmaceutical industry has continued to strive toward improving production standards and quality to compete in the global market.
The government also aims for Indonesia to become one of the pharmaceutical and health production hubs in the Southeast Asian region through the strengthening of research, technology, and national industrial capacity.
Nevertheless, observers remind that the challenges facing the national pharmaceutical industry remain significant, including dependence on imported raw materials and stiff competition with global producers.
With the WHO Listed Authority recognition, BPOM is expected to be able to strengthen Indonesia’s position in the global health industry chain while simultaneously increasing the access of national pharmaceutical products to international markets.
