A large-scale digital outage occurred almost simultaneously, affecting millions of internet users worldwide. Service monitoring data showed a very sharp surge in reported issues within a short period.
Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, was among the hardest hit. The number of reported disruptions skyrocketed from hundreds to over 35,000 in a span of just about 15 minutes. Many users claimed they were unable to access their timelines, refresh feeds, or use the app normally.
In addition to X, outages were also reported on Reddit, Microsoft Teams, Canva, Zoom, the investment app Robinhood, and several popular online gaming services, including Fortnite.
Based on user reports, nearly half of the complaints on X were related to app issues. Others reported disruptions with the timeline, content updates, and desktop access. A similar situation was experienced by users of other platforms, who faced service delays or failed to connect to servers.
Although the exact cause has not been officially announced by all affected companies, public attention has turned to a report from Cloudflare, which confirmed an increase in errors and latency across a number of internet services at around the same time the outage occurred.
Cloudflare was known to be running scheduled maintenance before the incident happened. This has sparked speculation among tech analysts that the outage might stem from a domino effect on the cloud infrastructure used simultaneously by many major digital platforms.
Meanwhile, internet monitoring organization NetBlocks reported that the disruption on X was related to issues within the backend timeline API system and was not linked to internet access restrictions in any specific country.
Amidst the ongoing outage, many users turned to alternative platforms to seek information and share their experiences. Meta’s Threads became one of the main destinations, with various memes and comments regarding the downfall of X and other platforms circulating heavily.
Most services began showing signs of recovery within approximately 20 to 30 minutes after the disruption was first detected. Nevertheless, this incident highlights once again the global reliance on interconnected digital infrastructure.
The simultaneous outage hitting X, Reddit, Microsoft Teams, Canva, and several other digital services stands as one of the largest outages this year. Although services are gradually recovering, the incident demonstrates how a disruption in internet infrastructure can have a widespread impact on communication, work, entertainment, and the digital activities of millions of users worldwide.
