The Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) stated that the continuous eruptive episode of Mount Anak Krakatau has ended after lasting approximately 25 hours. Although the phase has concluded, volcanic activity at the volcano in Lampung Province is still being monitored because seismic activity remains high.

Head of the Geological Agency Lana Saria explained that the continuous eruptive episode began on Friday (September 4) at 11:07 p.m. WIB and ended on Sunday (September 6) at 12:04 a.m. WIB. The period was part of a series of eruptive activity that continues to be closely observed by monitoring officers.

After the continuous eruptive episode ended, Mount Anak Krakatau’s activity returned to an eruption pattern with lower intensity. The condition was marked by three Strombolian eruptions.

During the three events, the eruption columns were observed to be black. According to the Geological Agency, the return of Strombolian eruptions indicates that the volcano’s activity has returned to a pattern that is one of the characteristics of Mount Anak Krakatau.

Nevertheless, the end of the continuous eruptive episode does not mean that Mount Anak Krakatau’s volcanic activity has completely stopped. The Geological Agency continues to monitor the volcano to observe developments in its activity.

Instrumental monitoring during the September 6–7, 2026 period continued to show high levels of seismic activity. This condition is one of the factors being considered when evaluating Mount Anak Krakatau’s volcanic activity.

Seismic activity is an important parameter in volcano monitoring. Changes in earthquake activity can provide information about dynamics occurring within the volcano and help authorities determine developments in volcanic activity.

Mount Anak Krakatau is located in the waters of the Sunda Strait, Lampung Province. The volcano’s eruptive activity is also closely monitored because volcanic ash can affect surrounding areas, including aviation activities if ash clouds enter flight paths.

Previously, Mount Anak Krakatau’s eruptive activity had caused volcanic ash to spread and affect several air transportation activities. The situation prompted airport operators and relevant authorities to conduct monitoring and mitigation measures to maintain aviation safety.

With the end of the continuous eruptive episode, Mount Anak Krakatau has now entered a different phase of activity. However, the high level of seismic activity means continued monitoring remains necessary to anticipate possible changes in volcanic activity.

The Geological Agency will continue evaluating instrumental data and visual developments at Mount Anak Krakatau. The monitoring results will serve as the basis for determining response measures and providing information about the volcano’s condition to the public and relevant stakeholders.
