Governor Sherly Officially Opens “North Moluccas Taekwondo Championship Governor’s Cup I”

Sherly Tjoanda officially opened the “North Moluccas Taekwondo Championship Governor’s Cup I” event held at the Ballroom of Hotel Bela, Ternate, on Thursday (28/5/2026).
The championship serves as a vital momentum for the development of the sport of taekwondo in North Maluku and is contested by hundreds of young athletes from various regions across Eastern Indonesia.
The opening ceremony was also attended by the General Chairman of the Executive Board of Taekwondo Indonesia (PBTI) Lieutenant General TNI Richard TH Tampubolon, Vice Governor of North Maluku Sarbin Sehe, coaches, sports officials, as well as the parents of the athletes.
In addition to the opening of the championship, the agenda was also integrated with the inauguration of the North Maluku Provincial Executive Board of Taekwondo Indonesia for the 2026-2030 term.
The 2026 North Moluccas Taekwondo Championship Governor’s Cup I features matches across various categories ranging from Pra-Cadet, Cadet, to Junior, with participants coming from several provinces in Eastern Indonesia.
In her remarks, Sherly assessed that this event is not merely a sports competition, but also marks the beginning of the revival of North Maluku taekwondo to produce high-achieving athletes at national and international levels.
She also expressed appreciation for the improvement in North Maluku’s taekwondo achievements, which are noted to have successfully risen from the bottom national ranks to enter the national top seven.
The Provincial Government of North Maluku, Sherly continued, will continue to support sports development through early childhood development, certification for coaches and referees, as well as the strengthening of taekwondo extracurricular activities in schools.
Sports observers assess that regional championships like this are important to open up competitive spaces for young athletes while simultaneously strengthening the local sports ecosystem.
Through the North Moluccas Taekwondo Championship Governor’s Cup I, it is hoped that new seed athletes will be born who are capable of bringing pride to North Maluku and Indonesia in national to international events.
